Seasonal Tips
Winterizing
List everything in your boat that contains water or water based products. Include water supply lines, sink and drain lines, engine blocks, exhaust manifolds, sea strainers and hoses, furnace systems, sanitation tank, hoses and heads. Don’t forget sitting bilge water.
Unless you can add antifreeze to it or keep it warm then all these items will break when it gets too cold, i.e. below freezing. Most enclosed areas inside the heads, galley, staterooms or engine room can be protected from freezing by simply hooking up a space heater and setting the thermostat above 45 degrees. Make certain to plug any vents, open hatches or openings leading to these areas to stifle any effects of the wind. Open all drawers and cabinets to protect plumbing, etc. To really economize electricity run your space heater through a ThermoCube switch. This device turns on your heater at 35 degrees and turns off at 42 degrees. Double check your current supply so as not to overload your breaker. If necessary run multiple supplies from different breakers.
If you don’t have any power then you must add antifreeze or drain away the water first before it freezes. Antifreeze, the non-toxic kind, can be obtained for any potable water source. Add this to your water tank, then circulate it throughout your potable system. Regular automotive antifreeze can be added to any other water containing reservoir or supply hose associated with the engine, exhaust or just about any drain hose. Pour antifreeze directly into your head, then flush it. Just make sure you mix or circulate the antifreeze throughout the system you are trying to protect. It will break if you don’t. And, if it is below the water line (like many sea strainers, valves, hoses or tubes, heat exchangers or exhaust manifolds) then your boat could sink when it thaws.
One last thing, if you removed a plug to drain off water before winter, don’t forget to reinstall it before use. << Back to Tips Categories |
