Engine Care Tips

There's a
lot more to engine maintenance than the obvious things. All the
supporting systems must also be maintained to assure engine performance
and longevity. These can be divided into four groups:
lubrication, fuel, electrical power and cooling. Treat each
system as a unit. For example your lubrication system requires
the proper rated oil, a high quality filter and crankcase
ventilation. Your fuel system needs an adequate storage
tank, return and supply plumbing, filters, pumps and injectors or
carburetor. The electrical system includes the batteries, the
cables and terminals, starter and alternator, start and stop solenoid,
computer and ignition (for gasoline). Cooling systems are
comprised of through- hull fittings, hoses, strainers, heat exchangers,
pumps and exhaust.
If you treat them each as one system you will lessen the chances of
failure or breakdown. As your vessel ages, all of the components
listed above age, too. They cannot be ruled out during routine
maintenance. Professional engine technicians know the importance
of checking the entire system before returning your boat to operation.
