Electrical Tips

As boats get older, so does their electrical systems. Not only do
electrical components such as pumps and instruments need care and
maintenance, but so does the wiring that feeds current to them.
Too many times boat owners overlook the condition of their wiring and
terminals. Always replace wiring that is visibly corroded or
chafed. Chafed wiring is common on systems not installed properly
where wires are not anchored or attached correctly to the device they
are powering. Corroded wiring is found in many areas of a boat
where you find submersion, weathering or just exposure to the marine
environment. Corrosion increases electrical resistance which
lowers voltage and produces heat. Many times boat owners replace
a damaged component, usually a pump, not realizing that the wiring is
damaged, too. The new component will not function well and will
wear out prematurely just because of the bad wiring.
It is always wise to have a marine electrician examine all of the wiring in your boat at regular intervals.
